As part of my Substack post “Dick Picks Dick’s Picks, Volume One (1992-1993),” listen to an interview with Dick Latvala and David Gans on an episode of the Grateful Dead Hour broadcast on November 1, 1993. Many thanks to David Gans for graciously providing an audio file of the original interview.

The long form video So Far (1987) figures prominently among many of the contemporary creative projects and business ventures that the Grateful Dead organization were pursuing in the middle of the 1980s. In my discussion of the development and history of So Far, I draw upon numerous archival documents preserved at the Grateful Dead Archive at the University of California, Santa Cruz, including meeting minutes, memos and letters, contracts, production materials, budget estimates, sales reports, and other materials. The information preserved on these varied documents provides a tremendous amount of insight into the history, legacy, and lasting influence of So Far. Special thanks to Len Dell’Amico for sharing some images from this time and for the fun chats.

To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of From the Mars Hotel, the present essay describes the band’s approach to recording, producing, and promoting the record when it was released in 1974. The essay draws upon numerous documents relating to From the Mars Hotel housed in the Grateful Dead Archive at the University of California, Santa Cruz.
